The Barak Beacon housing estate in Port Melbourne is one of those communities and its residents aren’t giving up without a fight!
The story so far
In 2021, just days before Christmas, residents received a knock on the door. The Victorian Government told them their homes would be demolished to make way for a new development and they’d be forced to move out.
Not one single new dwelling on the new site will be genuine public housing. The Government is effectively privatising the estate and handing the key over to property developers. Demolition has already started, but there’s still time to save Barak Beacon.
